S. Shannon Davis Hunter is a native Houstonian and member of the Texas A&M University Class of 2002. While at Texas A&M, Shannon majored in Biological Systems Engineering and represented the Dwight Look College of Engineering in the Student Senate. Additionally, she served as president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and was a 2003 recipient of the Buck Weirus Spirit Award. Shannon also holds a law degree from Howard University School of Law, where she graduated with honors in 2006. She is admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia.  After graduation, she started her career at Arnold and Porter, LLP, a preeminent international law firm.  At Arnold and Porter, Shannon practiced in the area of commercial real estate.  She let Arnold and Porter in 2009 to begin a career in tax credit and public finance and now works in the Affordable Housing Group of Coats Rose Yale Ryman & Lee PC.

Shannon’s law practice focuses on affordable and public housing acquisition, rehabilitation and development and is centered in the Commonwealth of Virginia, although she has represented clients and closed deals from Nevada to Massachusetts. She represents developers (both for-profit and nonprofit), syndicators, investors and public housing authorities in the development, redevelopment and renovation of housing. Specifically, Ms. Hunter assists her clients in leveraging various financing techniques, including HOPE VI financing, low income housing tax credits, private activity tax-exempt bonds, investment syndications and conventional financing. Additionally, Shannon has significant experience with the Virginia Low Income Housing Tax Credit application process, having represented dozens of clients seeking credit allocations. She also has experience with the Tax Credit Assistance and Section 1602 Exchange Programs, and has assisted clients using New Markets Tax Credits to finance projects.

Ms. Hunter has been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for over ten years and was initiated by the Xi Psi Chapter on the campus of Texas A&M University in the fall of 2000. She is currently a member of Rho Mu Omega Chapter in Washington, D.C. and is co-chair of the chapter’s committee on Social Justice and Human Rights. She is also a former member of the board of directors of the D.C. Pearls III Foundation, the non-profit organization charged with fundraising to support the programming goals of her local chapter. Shannon is a former member of the board of trustees of Southeastern University and has completed five endurance events to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). In 2008 she served as the Mission Captain for Team in Training’s National Capital Area Triathlon Team, which raced in the Nation’s Triathlon to raise funds for LLS.

In 2005 Shannon married her college sweetheart, Ernest Hunter II (‘01), a former Fightin’ Texas Aggie Combined Band Commander and a Ross Volunteer.  They have one daughter, Shelby, a future member of the Texas A&M Class of 2033; and one son, Ernest III, a future member of the Texas A&M class of 2036.
